need copyeditors

by | Aug 23, 2010 | Copyediting Capers

In his blog Ask the Agent, Andy Ross interviewed Mary Norris of the New Yorker. In a comment, one Ravikumar, apparently from my state, Tamil Nadu,  lamented that “we publish hundreds of weeklies and thousands of books every year. but there is no copy editor here”.  And this article quoted Ratan Tata, the Chairman of Tata Group, as saying

“The Tata Group is an Indian Group and we should not be looking (at it) as a Parsi group. The successor should be the right person and anti-Parsi or pro-Parsi”.

“The right person and anti-Parsi or pro-Parsi”? Who will then be the right-er person: an anti-Pari? or perhaps a pro-Parsi?

After racking your brain and when you still cannot conclude who will be right-er person, you refer to what Ratan Tata actually said and find that he said “The successor should be the right person and not anti-Parsi or pro-Parsi”.

Had there been a copy editor. . .
